Since JPush is a little hard to understand for Western developers (provided its documentation is written in Chinese), I’d recommend you consider a different approach to delivering push notifications in China.
Pushy is an independent push notification gateway. Lots of customers rely on Pushy to deliver push notifications reliably in China. It maintains its own background socket connection, just like GCM, to receive push notifications. The underlying protocol is MQTT, an extremely light-weight pub/sub protocol, utilizing very little network bandwidth and battery.

The engineers and developers working in the field are earning peanuts compared to what they would in the U.S. An experienced CTO at a tech firm in Zhongguancun might earn 30k RMB. A skilled programmer or product manager likely won’t make more than 25k. The work-life balance and perks on the job are also lagging far, far behind what skilled tech talent would expect in the West.

]]>Hi Aaron,
Glad you enjoyed it! More and more companies are jumping into this space (寓乐湾 is another example), though most focus on robotics. Then there are other maker-esque startups that teach kids how to grow plants, carve wood, use basic power tools, etc (GoGoGrow in Shanghai is an example). The guiding philosophy behind them is the same, but they’re completely devoid of the ‘modern tech skills’ that other startups will obsess over, like coding, 3D printing, and robotics.

I chose to mention JD and Taobao in this article because they are quite successful, in terms of numbers of backers and total money raised. Also, many startups will choose either JD and Taobao for their crowdfunding campaigns because of how many users and funds they attract.
And of course, for many Chinese individuals and companies, crowdfunding in China is much easier as there are fewer cultural and logistical barriers than international sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter.

]]>Exactly, the whole argument is fueled by the Silicon Valley brand, which is more emotional than rational. Media coverage on tech startups in China have been subject to prejudice, and SV VC are not ready to admit that some of the greatest innovations surfacing from China are no longer just copy-cats as they once were.
I really do like what the #BeiArea represents, complimentary to the #BayArea, where I called home for well over a decade before the blinding lure of China.
]]>Hey Rui, thanks for commenting!
First of all, let me admit that you’re absolutely right – I did refer to Traintracks as a SV company in China. Mea culpa. I’d like to believe that the team and I have evolved since then, and here’s why:
There’s something sinister, colonialist, and somewhat racist about the way we view Chinese innovation and startups operating in China. A very healthy percentage of engineers in Silicon Valley are from China – the brain drain from Bei to Bay is enormous – but the media typically has no problem referring to the products made there as fruits of Silicon Valley. The labor and innovation of Chinese engineers is only ever credited when it is being done close to where the SV VC class is – and I have been part of that narrative in the past.
Why is it that the West is happy to take credit for Chinese ingenuity when it’s paid for in dollars, but we scoff at the same engineers innovating at home?
And why is that someone coming from the East to the West is an immigrant, but I am considered an “expat”?
Once you see it, it is hard to unsee it. When I refer to myself as an expat instead of an immigrant, when I cling to the culture of SV instead of participating in the culture here, I am taking part in and furthering a narrative that deepens the divide between the East and the West.
Traintracks was made in China, and we’ve come to be proud of that. There was a time when China made sense because it was a cheap place to huddle down – but that’s not all there is to the #BeiArea. The hefty percentage of Chinese engineers in Silicon Valley have to come from somewhere – they come from here.
Within walking distance of our office are several of China’s most prestigious universities, churning out impressive and innovative engineers at rate fast enough to fuel both ecosystems.
Let’s call a spade a spade.
]]>I’m thrilled about China getting more attention for a place of innovation,
and challenging the status quo of Silicon Valley, yet “cost of
operation” is not really the primary reason for the phenomenon. Since
2012, I’ve been involved heavily in tech startups “made in China” or
“moved to China” in Beijing, and I have seen the way these companies
here have been treated by the media and VC from SV.
But what does all this mean for a companies like Traintracks that have mostly foreign
team members, conducting business almost exclusively in English. Nils,
the CEO of Traintracks himself had declared last year in an interview
with Reuters that his company was a “Silicon Valley company operating in
China.” I’m curious to see what has changed since then. Was half a
million bucks really enough to reach this recent “profitability?”
Working with companies like PengPeng and Gizwits is exciting because they clearly show the data demands for successful Chinese startups.
One of PengPeng’s viral HTML5 games got 180 million page views in a single day, but still only reached 20% of daily active users on WeChat. PengPeng CEO Andy Tian tells me that’s the most HTML5 traffic for a single app – and it’s from an early-stage Chinese startup with 30 million users.
]]>Me… :p
]]>The US has accused China and Chinese companies many times for many things. Remember the Huawei and ZTE “scandal’? Reputation of these companies was smeared within days and yet, in spite of the Congressional investigation, there was no evidence for anything these companies were accused of. Let’s face it – the US sees China as an enemy much more than China sees the US.
As for the US and Americans in general, nothing would make them more happy than China falling apart and collapsing totally. They’re rationalizing it, but that’s the end game they would like to see.

]]>Talking about Rush Hour, actually Beijing should think of options to improve existing transportation road network which is quite poor at the moment. Example Beijing city centre needs to build more express highways straight across the city centre instead of relying on the ring roads (think build upwards!). Also impose a daily fee if you want to drive inside the 5th ring road would ease traffic (just like London). Scrap the “turning right does not need to follow the traffic light signal rule”, and where are the double decker buses!!!

]]>This company hires all their teachers in the Philippines. Most of the teachers have no formal teaching experiences at all but has a good command of the english language hence the cheap lesson prices. Additionaly, they don’t treat teachers as their employees as stated in the Service Agreement instead they are just treated as Independent Service Provider so they won’t have to pay for government mandated benefits. Perhaps this is also the reason why they don’t treat teachers well and fairly.
Prior to joining this company, I have read a lot of negative comments online about this company. But I ignored it, thinking that they were just written by disgruntled teachers. However, I now share the same sentiments as them.
This company likes to make extra money from the teacher’s hard earned money. You see, we only get P50(RMB 6.16) to P66(RMB 9.15) PER CLASS/STUDENT. But they imposed steep penalties of P300(RMB 41.59) per CLASS/STUDENT for missed lessons.
A missed lesson happens when there’s a sudden power outage, lost of internet connection, sickness or some emergencies. None of these can be avoided at all and since all these situations happens suddenly we are deducted P300 right away and in REAL TIME. They said they will waived the penalties once a teacher presented a proof. Unfortunately, a lot of times they don’t waive it and if ever they do they don’t give the money back. It will take them ages for them to do it if they ever do but they will still keep a part of it for themselves.
Aside from the penalty, another unethical money making scheme for them is pocketing the reimbursements of the teachers. For instance, they used to give away tarpaulins with the 51talk logo printed on it to serve as the background while teaching. Now, they required us to have it printed by ourselves which they promised to reimburse us P100 for it. Imagine, a 3 feet by 3 feet tarpaulin and they’re just going to subsidize P100. Anyway, after we got it printed they no longer honor the reimbursement. Instead they will just give us excuses and alibis until they will cimpletely ignore you. If you pester them some more they will begin to pressure you and intentionally delay your fees/salary as what happened to some colleagues.
Another example, they required us to submit notarized special power of attorney and again, promising us that P100 will be subsidized. Until now, we have yet to receive a single cent.
The company, especially the local support/admin team doesn’t care about the teachers. Whenever there are concerns about the students they will be quick to respond but if the matter is about the teachers then they will just ignore you especially if it’s about money. The local support/admin will always address the admins in China with various racist remarks to make it sound like they are on our side but they are actually not. They used to tell us that they can defend us from a student’s complaint if we have a screenshot or speedtest but in the end they will still side with the students even when it’s clearly the student’s fault.
Even the trainings they provide the teachers are a joke. Teachers are required to undergo trainings to get promoted. Unfortunately, after you finished a training you will never get promoted unless you have a good rating/score from your students. They will suggest that you ask your regular students to give you a rating. This is another obstacle they put up. I guess they don’t like teachers to be promoted to save some money.
Normally, a company would want to have long term personnel nstead of going through the trouble of hiring new ones. But 51talk is different because they rather hire regulary instead of treating teachers fairly. Perhaps they do that because they prefer new teachers. They only need to pay new teachers P50 so it will save them a lot of money.
Sometimes they desperately needed teachers so they will give sign up bonus and referral incentives which are, unfortunately, misleading. The sign up bonus and referral incentives are given in 2-3 separate occasions and each occasion requires a teacher to complete a certain task before it is given. Not surprisingly, it is always delayed.
If this company is fair and ethical they would not make money from the teachers and they would’ve made a system to facilitate the waiving of penalties faster (as fast as they deducted it – REAL TIME), they won’t make broken promises about reimbursements and will treat teachers fairly.
Just because we are just independent service providers doesn’t mean we should be treated indifferently. They keep changing rules to protect themselves instead of it being fair to everyone.

I wanted to understand the recent developments taking place in the installment payment platforms in China. I had a few questions that I would love for you to answer.
1. In India, most of the ecommerce platforms have been offering EMI or installment payment options (through credit cards) for 2-3 years now. Was this not the case with China?
2. I tried exploring the biggest Chinese ecommerce sites, but couldn’t understand a lot (Chinese is difficult ! ). Do major Chinese ecommerce startups offer EMI or installment payment options OR only the companies mentioned in the above article offer installment payment options?
3. IF all Chinese ecommerce sites offer EMI or installment payment options, then what is the reason for the emergence of the above mentioned startups?
Thanks a ton!

I think it would be cool if they had their pricing info for realtors available without logging in. I think their lower, simple pricing is a benefit for them and having pricing info up-front for products is usually a good choice.
The only thing that puts me off about this site is the scare tactics about the firewall, which is really a lot less severe than they make it sound.
